Tragedy Strikes: Water Bead Recall after 1 Fatality and 1 Injury in Target’s Toy Kits

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a recall has been issued for over 50,000 water bead activity kits, produced by a New York-based gaming company and exclusively sold at Target. This decision comes following a disturbing incident where a 10-month-old child tragically lost their life after swallowing these water beads, as reported by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on Thursday.

Buffalo Games LLC, based in Buffalo, New York, has taken swift action to recall approximately 52,000 Chuckle & Roar Ultimate Water Beads Activity Kits due to concerns over ingestion, choking, and obstruction risks.

The CPSC issued a stern warning, stating, “The water beads pose a risk of serious injury or death if ingested. When ingested, the beads grow in size, which can cause intestinal obstruction.”

This announcement comes on the heels of Buffalo Games receiving a grievous report of a 10-month-old child’s death resulting from swallowing the recalled water beads in July 2023, which occurred in Wisconsin.

Furthermore, the company received another report of a 9-month-old child sustaining serious injuries in November 2022 in Maine after swallowing these water beads. This incident led to an intestinal obstruction that necessitated surgery for bead removal, as confirmed by CPSC.

What’s Inside the Activity Kit?
The Chuckle & Roar Ultimate Water Beads Activity Kit includes 2 ounces of “jumbo” water beads and 6 ounces of “regular” water beads. Alongside these beads, the kit contains a clear container with a lid, five small toy fish, a scissor scoop, tweezers, a scoop with a handle, 10 activity cards, and instructions.

The activity kit was packaged in a purple box with the UPC Number 079346627035 displayed on the back.

What Should You Do?
For those who have purchased these kits, the CPSC strongly advises discontinuing their use immediately and keeping them out of reach of children. Contact Buffalo Games for a full refund and follow their instructions for returning the product in a prepaid mailing package provided by the company or return the product to any Target store.

A Target spokesperson expressed condolences, saying, “We extend our deepest sympathies to the families affected by these tragic incidents. Guests who purchased this product should immediately return it and contact Target for a full refund.”

Where Were These Kits Sold?
The Chuckle & Roar Ultimate Water Beads Activity Kits were exclusively available at Target stores across the United States and on Target.com. They were sold from March 2022 through November 2022, priced at approximately $15 each.
