Washington, D.C., June 11, 2025 – President Donald Trump commented on a recent apology from Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO, after a public disagreement between the two. The conflict, which played out on social media, began in late May and grew worse in early June.
On June 11, at around 3 a.m., Musk posted on X that he regretted some of his comments about President Trump, admitting that a few of his posts “went too far.” Trump responded positively in a brief phone call with the New York Post, saying, “I thought it was very nice that he said that.”
The trouble started when Musk criticized Trump’s spending plan, called the “Big, Beautiful Bill.” Musk, who was leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) at the time, strongly opposed the plan. On June 3, he posted on X, calling the bill “a disgusting abomination” and criticizing Republicans who supported it. Soon after, Musk left the Trump administration, which allowed him to speak more freely.
The disagreement reached its peak on June 5 with heated social media exchanges. Musk made serious claims, including that Trump would not have won the 2024 election without his support and that Trump was hiding Jeffrey Epstein files for personal reasons. Musk later deleted the post about the Epstein files. Trump fired back, saying Musk was upset because the “Big, Beautiful Bill” would end an electric vehicle mandate from former President Joe Biden, which affects Musk’s company, Tesla.
During a press conference in the Oval Office on June 5, Trump addressed the situation, saying, “Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will anymore.” The next day, he told CNN, “He’s got a problem. The poor guy’s got a problem,” and said he would not speak to Musk for a while.
Musk had endorsed Trump in July 2024, and after Trump’s election win, he appointed Musk to lead DOGE. In that role, Musk pushed for major cuts in federal agencies and advised the president closely before their falling out.
The recent apology from Musk and Trump’s response suggest a possible step toward repairing their relationship, but it remains unclear if they will fully resolve their differences.
