The movie “Oppenheimer” has achieved a remarkable milestone by surpassing $500 million in box office earnings, setting a new record for the highest-grossing film set during World War II. On the same notable day when “Barbie” achieved the impressive billion-dollar mark in box office revenue, the other half of the viral sensation, known as “Barbenheimer,” also reached the remarkable half-billion-dollar mark.

In just three weeks since its release, Christopher Nolan’s film “Oppenheimer” has garnered a staggering $552.9 million from audiences worldwide, as officially reported by Universal Pictures. This accomplishment has propelled it to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of 2023. Additionally, the film has achieved the distinction of being the fastest Universal R-rated film to cross the $200 million mark domestically, as highlighted in a recent news release from the studio. Notably, “Oppenheimer” holds the distinction of being the highest-earning movie set during the World War II era.

Throughout its third weekend, “Oppenheimer” has demonstrated incredible staying power as it maintains its position as the third-highest grossing movie in both domestic and international box offices. The success of this blockbuster film is all the more impressive given its R-rating, lengthy running time, and subject matter. Industry expert Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, underscores the film’s remarkable achievement, noting that it has defied expectations and outperformed historical dramas in the box office realm.

The achievement is particularly notable for a three-hour biographical film centered around J. Robert Oppenheimer, the renowned physicist of the Manhattan Project. “Oppenheimer” joins an elite group of biopics that have managed to exceed the half-billion-dollar global revenue mark, alongside films like “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Passion of the Christ,” and “American Sniper.”

Paul Dergarabedian further praises “Oppenheimer” as one of the most celebrated and talked-about summer movies to emerge from a major studio. He attributes its success to exceptional filmmaking and a touch of unforeseen “Barbenheimer” magic, referring to the synergistic relationship between “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” leading up to their shared release on July 21. The unique contrast in style and tone between the two films likely contributed to their joint popularity.
