Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall of approximately 1.7 million eggs from August Egg Company due to potential salmonella contamination, affecting products sold across nine states, according to a statement released on June 7, 2025.

The recall targets brown cage-free and organic eggs distributed to major retailers, including Walmart, Save Mart, Safeway, and Ralphs, in California, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Wyoming, New Mexico, Nebraska, Indiana, and Illinois. The FDA reported that the eggs, sold between February 3 and May 15, 2025, carry sell-by dates from March 4 to June 19, 2025. Affected products, packaged in fiber or plastic cartons, bear codes P-6562 or CA5330 and include brands like Clover, Sunnyside, and Raley’s.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a multi-state salmonella outbreak linked to these eggs has sickened 79 people across seven states, with 21 hospitalizations reported as of June 7, 2025. The CDC is actively investigating the outbreak, which can cause severe illness, particularly in young children and the elderly.

“We are taking this voluntary recall seriously out of caution, as these eggs may still be in consumers’ homes,” August Egg Company stated, as reported by the FDA. The company has diverted all eggs from its processing plant to a pasteurization facility to eliminate pathogens.

Consumers are urged to return the recalled eggs for a refund or dispose of them immediately. The CDC advises against consuming the eggs and recommends cleaning any surfaces they may have contacted. Symptoms of salmonella, including diarrhea, fever, and dehydration, should prompt immediate medical attention.

The August Egg Company is conducting an internal review to prevent future outbreaks, stating, “We are fully committed to implementing corrective measures to ensure this does not recur,” per the FDA’s June 7 release. The company has halted fresh egg sales for over 30 days, redirecting products to pasteurization facilities.
