On June 10, 2025, Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, aged 28, shared a message on X to address her recent clash with Riley Gaines, a 25-year-old former swimmer and conservative activist. The two had a heated online argument about transgender athletes in women’s sports.

Biles had earlier called Gaines a “sore loser” and “truly sick” after Gaines commented on a post by the Minnesota State High School League. The post showed a girls’ softball team celebrating their first state championship. Gaines wrote, “Comments off lol. To be expected when your star player is a boy,” referring to Marissa Rothenberger, a transgender pitcher who helped the team win by preventing the other team from scoring, according to Fox News.

In response, Biles criticized Gaines, saying, “You’re truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race. Straight up sore loser.” She suggested creating a transgender category in sports to make them more inclusive and safe, adding, “No one in sports is safe with you around!” In another post, Biles wrote, “Bully someone your own size, which would ironically be a male.”

In her follow-up message on X, Biles apologized for getting personal with Gaines. She wrote, “I’ve always believed fairness and inclusion are important in sports. The current rules don’t balance these well, which causes frustration. I shouldn’t have attacked Riley personally, and I’m sorry for that.”

Biles said the issue of transgender athletes is “sensitive and complicated” and that she doesn’t have all the answers. She emphasized, “I don’t support policies that make women’s sports unfair. But I don’t think it’s right to publicly criticize kids for a system they can’t control. Sports organizations should make rules that support inclusion and fair competition.”

She ended her message with, “We all want sports to be fair, inclusive, and respectful. Xoxo Simone.”

This debate comes as the Trump administration, led by President Donald Trump, has taken action against states like California for allowing transgender athletes to compete in sports matching their gender identity. Earlier this month, 16-year-old transgender athlete AB Hernandez won the girls’ high jump and triple jump at a California state track meet, prompting the administration to threaten legal action and fines, CBS News reported. California’s Interscholastic Federation also changed its rules to let more “biological female student-athletes” compete in events with transgender athletes, according to AP.
